Welcome

Welcome to the MLibrary subject research guide for Sociology! The primary purpose of this guide is to assist students, staff and faculty at the University of Michigan in conducting research and in using the MLibrary resources and services effectively.

This guide is a collaborative, evolving collection of library resources and services, including research strategies and links to library-provided article databases, and incorporating comments, suggestions and feedback from students and faculty. Use the tabs above to start exploring the variety of tools and resources to assist you with your research.

If you have questions about this guide, or about sociology-related library research, I'm available by appointment.

Recommended Subject Headings

Use the catalog (Mirlyn) to locate books, DVDs, journal subscriptions, and data sets in the UM Libraries. Most useful searches are by author, book title, keyword, or subject. To search successfully by subject, you should use the Library of Congress subject headings. Some suggested subject headings are:

  • applied sociology
  • crime
  • culture
  • demography
  • economics -- Sociological aspects
  • educational sociology
  • families
  • organizational sociology
  • political sociology
  • religion and sociology
  • social change
  • social ethics
  • social problems
  • social psychology
  • social structure
  • social theory
  • sociologists
  • sociology, urban

Even though we have an extensive collection of research materials in sociology, you sometimes won't find the book or specific journal you need. In this instance, you might consider searching WorldCat, a shared catalog for libraries world-wide. WorldCat can indicate which libraries own the book or journal publication you want, allowing you to complete a borrowing request (Interlibrary Loan service) for the specific item.

Search for an item in libraries near you:
WorldCat.org >>

Our library's interlibrary loan service can also help you locate which library has what you need for your use locally. See Interlibrary Loan for UM Community for details.
