Terminology
Carceral is a term related to incarceration. Carceral studies includes work on mass incarceration and confinement, prison practices, policing, and criminal justice broadly defined.
Criminal justice is a system of rules and practices intended to enforce social norms, protect society and individuals from behavior deemed illegal, and to punish those who violate these laws.
Criminology is the study of crime. It is interdisciplinary and includes social and individual reasons for criminal behavior and how such behavior is defined and controlled.
