About Urge

URGE, Unlearning Racism in Geoscience, is an NSF-funded program which operates at a grassroots level within departments nationwide. Objectives include:
 
  1. deepening  knowledge of the effects of racism on the participation and retention of People of Color in the geosciences
  2. developing anti-racist policies and resources within a national community
  3. implementing and assessing anti-racist policies, programming, and resources within Geoscience workplaces.

URGE at University of Michigan

 
A local Michigan Earth DEI Pod at the University of Michigan is composed of a group of graduate students, postdocs, staff members, lecturers, and faculty. The UM Earth pod is one of over 250 pods developed in 2021. Our work has been focused on the development of equity focused anti-racist programming and resources.
 
Recent initiatives:
  • Contribution of plans and goals for the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences' 10-year strategic plan
  • Creation and distribution of resource lists for finding on-campus community groups, mental health resources, community support, and professional development
  • Contributions to the development of a Graduate Student Handbook, with emphasis on specific resources centered on inclusion
  • Initiation of undergraduate and graduate student field experiences with attention to making field trips more inclusive
  • Organization of department-wide anti-racist pedagogy workshops for graduate students and faculty instructors
