Scandinavian Studies

Scandinavian Studies is a unit within the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. The unit offers three years of instruction in Swedish, as well as courses in English on various aspects of Scandinavian civilization.

The Unit offers a minor in Scandinavian Studies.

Scandinavian Club is a student-run organization open to all in the community. The group hosts regular activities and coordinates with other groups and events in the larger community.

The University of Michigan has established a number of exchange programs with universities in Nordic countries. These may be general programs, or directed at specific fields and levels. Of particular note are the programs at Uppsala University and Stockholm University.

"SASS is an association of scholars and others interested in the cultures of the Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Founded in 1911, the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study has as its objectives:

1. the promotion of Scandinavian study and instruction in America;
2. the encouragement of original research in this country in the fields of Scandinavian languages, literatures, history, culture, and society and the publication of the results of such research in the quarterly journal Scandinavian Studies;
3. the fostering of closer relations between persons interested in Scandinavian studies in North America and elsewhere."

"This guide is a list of scholarly resources in Scandinavian Studies. Intended primarily for librarians; it may be useful to scholars in this field. It is curated and managed by members of the European Studies Section (ESS) of the Association of College & Research Libraries."

"The Language Bank is a service provided by the Language Resource Center, intended to bring together students, faculty, and staff of the University of Michigan who are interested in translating, with campus and community agencies who need translation or interpretation services."

The LRC also maintains a list of professional services, for projects that are outside the scope of the Language Bank.

STINA maintains a directory of members who provide translation services.

The Detroit area lodge of the Sons of Norway fraternal organization is based in Farmington Hills. The group hosts regular events and offers classes in Norwegian language.

The Swedish Club hosts its own events and language classes, and also coordinates and hosts events for a number of related organizations.

The Finnish Center, based in Farmington Hills, hosts a variety of events, including a regular Finnish-language conversation group.
