The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements [NCRP] is a non-profit corporation that publishes NCRP Reports, which provide authoritative recommendations and guidance on topics related to radiation protection and measurements.
These reports are widely used in fields that deal with ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, including medicine, nuclear engineering, occupational health, environmental science, and more.
NCRP was chartered by Congress in 1964 to:
U-M Library has many NCRP reports, either digitally in a library database or in print on a library shelf. Use the methods below to find reports, and contact the Nuclear Librarian if you cannot find the report you need.
Some reports are inside the engineering database Knovel.
Starting from Knovel's home screen (indicated by the house icon in the upper left corner) use the "Search Knovel" tab.
Type in either the title of the report (see example below for 'Radiation Safety Aspects of Nanotechnology') or the number of the report in format 'NCRP Report No. 176'.
The NCRP report of interest should come up in search results, usually as the first option.
Things to keep in mind:
→ Knovel classifies these reports as content type: Book
→ Any keywords put in the search bar will be highlighted yellow in your search results
→ Individual sections are downloadable as PDFs
If a report is not inside Knovel, try searching the Library's Catalog. These NCRP reports have been purchased individually by the library.
Starting from U-M Library Search, with the 'Catalog' category selected, type in the title of the report. In the example below the first result is the correct report (confirmed by Contributor = National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements). This is a digital version, so click on "Available online" to access the report.
In another example, the NCRP report is in print, in the library's "offsite shelving" location. Using "Get This" will allow the report to be delivered to any library on campus for pickup.
Things to keep in mind:
→ In the library catalog it is better to search by title and not report number
→ It can take 1-2 days to have a print report delivered to the preferred library
NCRP Reports are numbered, but sometimes numbers are missing. Here are the existing published NCRP Reports, with their number, title, and year.
U-M Library does not have access to all reports, use the methods above to search for reports.
