National Institutes of Health Public Access Policy

This guide provides NIH grantees and administrative staff information about the NIH Public Access Policy (NIH PAP), how to comply, and how to manage publications in eRA Commons using the My Bibliography portal in My NCBI.

Submitting Author Accepted Manuscripts using NIHMS

If you need to submit your Author Accepted Manuscript to PubMed Central manually to gain compliance (see "Determine Your Compliance Options"), you will use the NIH Manuscript Submission system (NIHMS) to complete the submission process and acquire a PubMed Central ID number (PMCID).

The NIHMS process involves depositing your Author Accepted Manuscript files. Note that these files include your peer-reviewed manuscript draft, tables, images, and supplements prior to final publisher formatting. The publisher's Final Published Article (with the publisher's formatting) cannot be submitted to the NIHMS system.

Manuscript deposit using the NIHMS is a multi-step process that takes approximately 2-3 weeks and includes two rounds of author approval.

Six-step NIH Manuscript Submission Process, including file deposit; initial approval; NIHMS conversion; final approval; PMCID assigned; and available in PMC.
