Finding & Using Media

Provides information about finding and using physical and streaming media.

Media in the Library

The Askwith Media Library has a large and unique collection of DVDs and Blu-rays that includes feature films, television shows, documentaries, short and experimental films, animated films, and instructional/educational videos. We actively collect media in a broad range of languages. Other libraries on campus may include media in their collections (e.g. the Music Library).

How to Find Media

To find a film resource, please start with the Library Catalog Search.

  • Search by keyword, title, director, etc.
  • Use the Format filter on the left to select Visual Material
    • Narrow down further by year, language, library location, etc. if necessary
    • For streaming video only, select the Available Online box
  • Catalog records for physical media (like DVDs and Blu-rays) will display a building or shelf location
  • Catalog records for streaming media (hosted on vendor platforms like Kanopy and Docuseek) will have a link to the streaming video; look for the Available Online link

We also provide access to several online databases with streaming video, the contents of which may not be represented in the library catalog.

To find an audio resource, again, use the Library Catalog Search.

  • Search by keyword, title, performer, composer, etc.
  • Use the Format filter on the left to select Audio
    • Narrow down further by year, language, subjects, library location, etc. if necessary
    • For streaming audio only, select the Available Online box
  • Catalog records for streaming media (hosted on vendor platforms like Naxos or Alexander Street) will have a link to the streaming audio file; look for the Available Online link

Using Film in Courses

For instructors on the Ann Arbor campus interested in assigning specific films for course assignments and class discussion, please see our webpage on using film.

For individual student viewing, instructors can "reserve" a specific film in our physical collection.  Please contact the Askwith Media Library staff to make these type of reserve requests at askwithmedia@umich.edu or (734) 764-5360.

Instructors sometimes want streaming film versions available to their students for a short time. Please use this request form to submit a streaming film request for a specific course. When submitting a request it's important to remember the process to acquire a temporary streaming license can take two weeks or more. Library staff can help instructors identify appropriate streaming film links, and can help add these links in Canvas course sites.
