U-M Support for Open Access Publishing

Discounts on APCs for U-M Affiliated Authors

The U-M Library negotiates discounts with certain publishers on fees that are often required to publish open access. Learn about opportunities with those publishers.

Deep Blue Documents and Deep Blue Data

Deep Blue is the University of Michigan’s institutional repository for documents and data. Benefits of the Deep Blue service include a commitment to long-term preservation for many file types, increased visibility for the products of your scholarly and creative workflows, and curation by data experts to ensure high-quality organization of your data for U-M researchers.

Do you have a grant that requires open access publication of documents or data produced by the grant? Depositing your work in Deep Blue satisfies open access grant requirements in many cases.

The University of Michigan Press

The University of Michigan Press -- part of the U-M Library -- has several publishing initiatives that support open access publishing. The University of Michigan Press works with all of its authors to determine whether OA publication is most suitable for their goals with answers to questions that authors often have when considering whether to publish their work OA. Such questions range in focus from production, to content licensing and intellectual property, to financial considerations.

Michigan Publishing journals are fully OA in most cases. Consider making your journal article OA with Michigan Publishing which facilitates re-use and offers the advantages of increased visibility, sustainable business models, and world-class preservation infrastructure.

Maize Books publishes entirely OA titles. It is an imprint for University of Michigan work.

Lever Press is dedicated to born-digital, peer reviewed, open access monograph publishing. It is supported by a large group of liberal arts colleges.

Fulcrum is an OA platform that includes scholarly materials. The University of Michigan Press hosts this "community-based, open source publishing platform that helps publishers present the full richness of their authors' research outputs in a durable, discoverable, accessible and flexible form."

TOME is an initiative from the Association of American Universities, Association of Research Libraries, and Association of University Presses to advance the wide dissemination of scholarship by humanities and humanistic social sciences faculty members through open access editions of peer-reviewed and professionally edited monographs. The University of Michigan is a founding member and offers grants each year to University of Michigan faculty.

Learn how U-M instructional and research faculty, or a librarian, curator, or archivist can apply for a TOME Publishing Grant (See definitions of positions in University Bylaws, Section 5.01 if you aren’t sure.) Eligible faculty authors from any U-M school, college, or unit may apply. (Research investigators, research fellows, lecturers, and students are not eligible.)
