Journal Impact Factor
A Journal Impact Factor (IF) measures the average citation frequency of a journal's articles within a particular year. The calculation is based on a two-year period, where a journal's citations are divided by the number of total published citable articles. This indicator originated to assist librarians in making journal subscription decisions, and is now frequently used in research communities as a proxy for individual article impact. The strength of association between article and journal impact has been called into question in the literature.
The IF can be found using the tool Journal Citation Reports by Clarivate.

- The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA)DORA was published in 2013 and has since been signed by thousands of individuals and scientific organizations. DORA argues that the Journal Impact Factor should not be used in research assessment "as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research articles," among other considerations.
Eigenfactor Score
The Eigenfactor Score:
- is based on the rate that a journal's articles (published within five years) have been cited in the current year.
- is a calculation that gives more weight to citations from highly cited journals than citations from lesser cited journals.
- calculation removes within-journal references so scores are not influenced by journal self-citation.
