Searching for Books and Videos

  • Use the U-M Library Catalog Search to find books and videos
  • Go directly to the Advanced Search page to enter this specific search strategy that should return relevant results on the immigrant group that you are studying

Step 1: Enter and Run the Search

  • Change the drop-down search field menu (to the left of the search box) to Subject for each line

 In the first search box, enter a set of words to represent your ethnic/immigrant group

  • [Country] OR [Ethnicity/Nationality] OR ["Ethnicity/Nationality American"]

    • Combine the set of like terms together with OR in-between each term in order to expand your search on all possible keyword variations

    • Use quotation marks around "exact phrases"

[Country] OR [Ethnicity/Nationality] OR ["Ethnicity/Nationality American"]

In the second search box, enter keyword variations for the concept of migration or immigration:

Migration is more often used for movement within boundaries like regional or political borders where immigration/emigration refers to migration or relocation from one country to another

immigrants OR immigration OR migration

 

In the third search box, enter the name of the country or region to which your group immigrated:

for example:

"United States"

Make sure that AND is selected between each separate row of search boxes

Click the blue "Advanced Search" button to run the search

Step 2: Apply Filters to the Search Results

  • Use the filters on the left-hand column of the search results page
    • Filter by Format as needed:
      • Books
      • Visual Materials (this will return both streaming and DVD videos)
    • Filter by Language as needed:
      • English
