Tips for Using Library Search

Provides some tips and strategies for effectively using the University of Michigan Library search engine.

About Get This

The Get This option you see in the Library Catalog search results provides the following services:

  • On-campus pickup: to get items that can be checked out from campus library buildings shipped to a campus library of your preference. This includes requests for items sent from remote and offsite storage areas (e.g. Buhr).
  • Holds: to place a hold on an item currently checked out, in the processing workflow, or on order so that you can be the next person to check out the item.
  • Document delivery: have small portions of local items scanned (such as book chapters or journal articles from print sources). This service is free.
  • Instructors may also use the Get This option for Askwith Media Library items (i.e. DVDs) to reserve films for future classroom viewing.

Note: It's also possible to request items from the Special Collections Research Center. Look for the Request This link in the catalog record or follow the link to the online finding aid, if there is one. The items you request will be retrieved and held for you to view in the Special Collections Research Center.
