Grant Writing Help in Engineering

This guide provides tips on writing grants for College of Engineering researchers.

Writing a Data Management Plan

What is a data management plan (DMP)?

A DMP typically is a two page addendum to a grant proposal that states your data management practices both during and after the proposed project. Many funding agencies, including federal agencies, now require one as part of a grant proposal. A DMP can include how you will:

  • generate your data, including the type(s) of data being collected (size, format, etc.)
  • document the ways in which your data was generated, analyzed, visualized, etc.
  • store your data safely and securely
  • share your data with collaborators and external researchers
  • preserve your data after the project is finished

Before writing your DMP, check the guidelines for the funding agency that you're submitting your proposal to. Guidelines can vary widely so check them early!

Why do funding agencies require DMPs?

  • Increased transparency and reproducibility of research
  • Increased awareness that data are a valuable part of research that need to be shared and preserved
  • Want to fund projects with well defined research data management practices
