Tips for Using Library Search

Provides some tips and strategies for effectively using the University of Michigan Library search engine.

Tips for Mirlyn Classic Users

Due to the Library's migration to a new library technology system, Mirlyn Classic was decommissioned on July 20, 2021. If you were a user of Mirlyn Classic, below are tips on how to use Library Catalog Search for equivalent functions.

Searched for specific titles, author’s names, journal/serial names, or series name The Advanced Search form, selecting the relevant options in the pull-down menus. E.g. Choose “Title,” “Author,” “Journal/Serial Title,” or “Series (transcribed).”
Searched by subject designated by Library of Congress headings The Advanced Search form, selecting the “Subject” option in the pull-down menu.
Searched for specific call numbers

The Advanced Search form, selecting the “Call number starts with” option in the pull-down menu.

Used the Command Language search option to search for specific, indexed record fields (e.g. date of publication, language, etc.)

Apply filters to narrow your final search results. Filters are available for Format, Subject, Publication Date, Language, Availability, Library location, Academic Discipline, Author, Place of Publication, Region and Library Collection.

Additionally, you can create a more precise search with the Advanced Search form, by limiting your search to specific libraries and storage locations, date of publication, language, format, place of publication, etc. 

Browsed by the beginning words in a title to see similar titles 

The Advanced Search form, selecting the “Title starts with” option in the pull-down menu. 

Then, use the “Sort by Title'' option on your search results list. This option is found on the “Sort by” menu at the top of your list of results.

Browsed by title in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean languages

Searched by ISSN or ISBN
 
The Advanced Search form, selecting the “ISBN/ISSN/OCLC/etc.” option in the pull-down menu.
Browsed by call number to see the relationship to similar materials as if they were on a library shelf

Browse by Call Number (LC & Dewey).

NOTE: This feature excludes special collections shelf location numbers and media collections accession numbers.

Searched for materials in Course Reserves by course number or instructor name Visit your Canvas course site to access assigned course reserve materials (see Library Tools).
Placed a reservation on an item held at the Askwith Media LIbrary for use in the classroom at a future date (known as “Media Booking”)
 

[ONLY FACULTY/FACULTY PROXIES/STAFF/ GSIs] Use the “Get This” option to place a future reservation for a specific item.
NOTE: DVDs in the regular circulating collection can be checked out under standard borrowing guidelines using options under Get This.

Searched for materials in Course Reserves by course number or instructor name Visit your Canvas course site to access assigned course reserve materials (see Library Tools).
Browsed by author name to see similar author names and the items associated with them
 

 Browse by Author to view an alphabetical list of author names.

Browsed by Library of Congress subject heading to see the relationship between major topics and sub-topics

 

 Browse by Subject to view a list of official subject headings used in our collections.
