How Do I Choose?
Take a few moments and think about what you want on your site and what it's purpose is. Who is your audience? (think about any restriction needs as described above)
After you decide, take a look at our handouts to the left to help you get started or set up an appointment by contacting email@example.com (faculty only), firstname.lastname@example.org, or email@example.com.
Why are you building a web site?
Any tool (Google Sites, Sitemaker, building your own in Dreamweaver, etc.) will work, depending on how much time you want to spend learning/customizing the site.
Official UM page/site
For official sites, check with your unit/department to make sure a specific tool isn’t required, but otherwise, any tool will work, depending on how much time you want to spend learning/customizing the site.
Where will you be creating the site?
A single computer
Dreamweaver is a Desktop program, meaning it needs to be installed on the computer you are using. SITES and Virtual SITES computers have it; for departmental/unit use, you would need to check with your local IT unit.
I need to edit/access it from anywhere
WordPress.com, Google Sites and SiteMaker are web-based tools, so those could be used from any computer with Internet access.
How much customization do you want?
I’d like to change some things such as colors and fonts, but beyond that is not a big deal
WordPress.com and Google Sites are template-based systems that allow some customization, but there are some things you can’t really change.
I’d like to be able to change anything I want
SiteMaker is also a template-based system, but you can customize pretty much anything if you’re willing to spend the time to learn how to do it.
With Dreamweaver, you are creating the pages from scratch, so you can customize anything
How much time are you willing to spend creating the site?
I want something that can be created quickly and is easy to maintain
I am willing to spend time customizing the site, but not a lot of time
WordPress.com, Google Sites and SiteMaker are template-based systems, so you can get a site up fairly quickly. If you invest more time, you can customize the pages within limits
I am willing to invest considerable time in creating and customizing the site
Building a site with Dreamweaver will take quite a bit of time and has a higher learning curve, but you have complete flexibility on how the pages look
