The University Committee on the Use and Care of Animals (UCUCA)
The University Committee on the Use and Care of Animals (UCUCA) is responsible for ensuring researchers at the University of Michigan adhere to University policy and federal law regarding the humane care and treatment of animals used in research. UCUCA monitors the use of animals in research in a variety of ways, including review of the Animal Use Application, conducting animal facility and laboratory inspections, and providing training and guidance for animal care and use personnel.
This guide is intended to serve UCUCA committee members and staff, as well as researchers investigating or using animal models in research by facilitating access to information regarding the Animal Welfare Act, the 3 Rs of incorporating animals in research, and methods and sources to search for alternatives to animal models.
