Topic Overview
Try subject based encyclopedias or books found through Mirlyn or WorldCat to get a general overview of your topic and to learn the major theories, studies and researchers connected to your topic.

Mirlyn
Use the library catalog, Mirlyn, to search for books that would give you an overview of your topic. Some useful subject headings to use for this kind of search would be "history" or "bibliograph*" or "handbooks". For instance, an advanced search in Mirlyn of "affirmative action" as a subject and history OR bibliograph* OR handbooks as subject would get you general overviews of the topic.
