Integrating Library Services and Resources with Canvas

Information for instructors on how to integrate University of Michigan library resources into Canvas sites. Also, how to give someone Librarian access to your site.

Adding Library Tools

The list of "items" on the Navigation page is quite long and sorted alphabetically, so the U-M tools show up very near the bottom.  They are hidden by default. Add them to the visible course navigation by dragging them into the top list.

The LibGuides tool requires additional setup, as you must select the intended Guide to be displayed.  Additional information is available below.

Displaying U-M Library Research Guides in Canvas

This document will describe two ways to display/add U-M Library Research Guides to your Canvas course site. This document is intended as a suppliment to basic Canvas support documentation available at the Instructure website.

  • Add a Research Guide to the top-level site navigation.

  • Add a Research Guide to a Module.

Adding a guide to the top-level site navigation

The U-M Research Guides tool is available to all course sites. The tool is hidden by default. The course instructor or others with set-up privileges at the site can enable the tool.

  1. Enable the tool. Go to  the Settings page for the site and select the Navigation tab.

  2. Locate the “U-M Research Guides” tool in the Inactive list. Select “Enable” from the min-menu or drag the tool up into the Active list.

  3. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page. This should refresh the site and the U-M Research Guides tool should appear in the site navigation.

  4. Select a specific guide. Click “U-M Research Guides” in the site navigation.

  5. When prompted for LibApp Library Content, select the appropriate “Content Type” from the menu. The most common option is “Full LibGuide.”  You will then be prompted to select a “Guide” by name or by metadata.  “By name” is recommended.  Select from the alphabetical listing, or by typing in the search field. You can then select the specific page.

  6. When you have identified the correct guide/page, click “Embed Content.”

Adding a guide to a Module

The U-M Research Guides tool can be used to embed guide content into a Canvas module. The embedded guide content will appear within the frame of the course site. This approach can improve the effective integration of Library materials into the flow of coursework. You can create any number of module items based on the U-M Library Research Guides tool.

  1. Add a new item to an existing module. Select “External Tool” from the item type dropdown menu.

  2. Scroll down the long list of external tools and select “U-M Library Research Guides.” Selecting this option will automatically populate the URL field with the tool launch URL. DO NOT CHANGE THIS URL. YOU WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SELECT YOUR GUIDE LATER.

  3. Click “Add Item.” This should return you to the Modules list, where you will see the new item has been added to the list.

  4. Select a specific guide. Click the name of your new item, “U-M Research Guides,” in the modules list.

  7. To change the default name of the item, select “Edit” from the item mini-menu.

Don’t forget to “Publish” the item to make it visible to students. Note: if you select the wrong guide when embedding in a module, you will need to delete the item.

Further Considerations

If you want to link to more than one guide in the site navigation, you must use the Redirect tool in the Apps center.  If you are unfamiliar with the Redirect tool, contact librarytools@umich.edu for help.
