International Programs in Engineering Resources

This library guide provides pre-departure information and library resources for students traveling abroad through IPE.

Health and Safety

International Programs in Engineering (IPE) is dedicated to helping you enjoy a safe and healthy overseas experience. Here are just a few of the resources and support services we provide for our program participants.

Overseas Travel Clinic

From immunizations to food safety, it is very important that you prepare yourself to stay healthy while traveling abroad. The Overseas Travel Clinic at the University of Michigan Health System is available by appointment to people who need health advice before travel.

U-M Travel Guides and Subscriptions

These resources from the U-M Global Michigan portal can assist travelers in making informed pre-departure plans, mitigating risks, and taking ownership of their wellness.

Travel Health Insurance

The University of Michigan designed this medical plan specifically for international travel. Coverage is only $1.15/day plus a $5 registration fee. The plan is open to ALL students (including students pursuing non-UM programs or independent activities). Coverage is required for IPE programs and participants are automatically registered in this plan.  IPE strongly recommends that individual students extend their coverage for pre- or post- program travel.

Travel Registry

The College of Engineering requires all students (both undergraduate and graduate) to register their international experience with the International Programs in Engineering (IPE) office. Participants in IPE study abroad programs are already entered and do not need to complete this registry. International students should not register travel to their home countries.

Centers for Disease Control

As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish our mission, CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.

Global Health Research Training

Online course on Ethical Challenges in Short-Term Global Health created by the Stanford University Center for Global Health and Johns Hopkins University Berman Institute of Bioethics.

Resilient Traveling

This content on resiliency and its applicability to international travel was developed by the University of Michigan Psychological Clinic staff. We are aware of the profound impact that unforeseen challenges can have on students' lives both in the field and when they return to university life. We offer these tools and insights to assist in that transition
