Your Assignment

The course design assignment requires you to identify a new primary text for the course, as well as secondary materials (additional books, scholarly articles, book chapters).  Thinking about the type of resource you're trying to find will help you decide where to search (in Mirlyn, in a library database, etc.).

Looking for books (and other stuff)? Use Mirlyn, the library catalog

Mirlyn (http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu)

  • Search for books and other items by keyword, subject, title, author, etc.
  • For your assignment, you'll need to identify books to use as primary texts for your course.  One way you can do that is to look for a known book, for example, Squires' African Americans and the Media. Look up that title in Mirlyn, and then look at the corresponding subject headings or similar items to search for additional similar or related materials.

  • When searching in Mirlyn, you can also limit your search to the "Subject" field in the drop-down menu.  Some possible subject and search terms to use (also try other terms - don't limit yourself!) :
