Musicology 139 - World Music

This guide is designed to give you a brief overview of some of the basic resources available from the Music Library to help you with your Musicology 139 world music assignment.

Getting Started

Smithsonian Global Sound is a great place to explore traditional music from around the world. Two easy ways to access the site are through this guide's link or through the quick links menu on the Music Library homepage.

If you are unsure about where to start, Smithsonian Global Sound offers many ways to browse through its sound recordings. On the upper left hand side of the home page you can browse by cultural group, place, genre, instrument and more.

When browsing any area, you can also search within that area if you are looking for something specific. For example, if you were looking for music from Brazil, you can search for Brazil when browsing places. Another example is if you were looking for Celtic music, you search for Celtic when browsing genres or Celts when browsing cultural groups.
