Espresso Book Machine: Getting Started

How to use the UM Library's Espresso Book Machine to create professionally printed books using your own content or public domain materials.

What is the Espresso Book Machine?

The Espresso Book Machine, or EBM, is an automated book-making machine that creates high-quality paperback books. The machine can print, bind, and trim a 300 page book in about seven minutes.

Though ebooks are becoming increasingly popular, there are times when a print book would be a more suitable choice.  The EBM provides that choice in a cost-effective and convenient way for students, faculty, staff, and the local community.

Some of the services provided by the EBM include:

  • Affordable reprints of out-of-copyright books from the Library’s collection or other repositories such as the Internet Archive
  • Small print runs of class output in book form, such as anthologies of creative writing
  • Printed copies of proceedings of University conferences and events
  • Self-publishing projects

The EBM is located on the first floor of the Shapiro Undergraduate Library, between the Tech Deck and the Center for Entrepreneurship.  To view a floor plan, please click here.
