Exporting from RefWorks in the RIS Format

From RefWorks:

  1. Select references for export.
  2. From the References menu, select Export.
  3. On the Export References window, at Select an export format, choose Bibliographic software (EndNote, Reference Manager, Procite).

A new tab opens in your browser.

  1. Save the page as a .txt file (in Firefox, ALT/ File/ Save File As).
  2. Follow the directions in the new citation manager program for importing an .ris file.

Exporting References from Databases

PubMed

  1. Select references from your search results
  2. From the Send to link in the upper right,
    • Select Citation manager
    • Click Create File button
  3. In RefWorks,
    • from the References menu, select Import
    • In Import window, select Import filter/Database (NLM/PubMed), then Database (PubMed)
    • Browse to find document
    • Click Import button

ProQuest databases (ERIC, ABI/INFORM, PAIS Index, etc.)

  1. Select references from your search
  2. Click Save icon in upper right
    • Under Export/Save, select RefWorks
    • In the new Export/Save window, click the Continue button
  3. Next, choose Legacy RefWorks to import your references

EBSCO databases (CINAHL, PsycINFO, Global Health, etc.)

  1. From your search results, add references to a folder by clicking the plus sign on the folder icon at right (note that when added, the folder icon changes shape & color).
  2. At the top right, under Folder has items, click Go to folder view.
  3. On the Folder View window,
    • Above the list of items, click in the Select all box or click to select individual items
    • Click the Export icon on the right.
    • On the Export Manager window,
      • on the right, under Save citations to a file formatted for:, select RefWorks.
      • On the left, click the Save button.
  4. Select Export to Legacy RefWorks to import your references

Exporting from RefWorks to Excel

In RefWorks:

  • Select the references to be exported.
  • From the References menu, select Export.
  • In the Export References window, at Select an Export Format, choose Tab Delimited.
  • Click the Export References button.
  • A new window opens in your web browser.  Save the window as a text (.txt) file (CTRL + S for PCs).

In Excel:

  • On the Data tab, from Get External Data, select From text.
  • Search for your file ([your user name]_RefList.txt).
  • In the Text Import window, step 1, select Delimited & click the Next button.
  • At step 2, select Tab & click the Next button.
  • At step 3, leave the Column data format at the default of General & click the Finish button.
  • In the Import Data window, choose your location (Existing worksheet or New worksheet) & click OK.
